This Ancient Bronze Ding is a standard vessel for food sacrificing. Dings usually have 3 or 4 legs - especially from the older eras. The kind of fang-dings are "Square Dings", "Li-Ding", "Flat Foot Dong (pianzu ding)", which were commonly used during the Chang times.
The development of ancient bronze meant a civilization that was a settled and organized society. The bronze making process required locating, protecting, mining, and smelting the ores that contain copper and tin which produced the bronze metal. Bronze was customarily used to make stronger tools for agriculture and better weapons for war.
In old China the talents of skilled bronze crafters were put to special use of casting drinking vessels and food containers - which played a central role in ancestor worship and ceremonial rituals.
