The Gu is a tall, slim wine container with a wide opening and rare ornamental symbols of the early Shang and Western Zhou Dynasties. The simplicity of the Gu has been handed down for many centuries. Another type of Gu are the quadrangular vessels called the "fang-gu".
The development of ancient bronze meant a civilization that was a settled and
organized society. The bronze making process required locating, protecting, mining,
and smelting the ores that contain copper and tin which produced the bronze metal.
Bronze was customarily used to make stronger tools for agriculture and better weapons
for war.
In old China the talents of skilled bronze crafters were put to special use of casting
drinking vessels and food containers - which played a central role in ancestor worship
and ceremonial rituals.
